About Dun & Spinner

We offer guided fishing trips to loads of venues, all through the year

Meet our Guides

Gary

Gary

Gary is the founder and owner of Dun&Spinner. He learned to fish at the age of 6 on the Medway and Eden rivers in Kent which in those days held wild populations of brown trout as well as coarse fish. Now with over 30 years’ experience fly fishing and guiding parties all over the world. ‘I’ve lost track of the number of people I’ve introduced to fly fishing but it’s a lot. Nothing gives me a buzz like helping someone to crack it and seeing their delight when it finally all clicks into place. Fish on!’.

Magni

Magni

‘Mummi’ for short is our man in Iceland. He is a very experienced and has guided and fished many of Iceland’s best rivers. A demon with a riffled fly which for my money is one of the most exciting ways to fish he is a passionate fisher of Char and Trout as well as Salmon and all round hunter. The real surprise was he is also a superb cook.Handy when your lodge is in the middle of nowhere. His Char sashimi is off the scale.

Alex

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Son of Gary who readily admits, ‘he’s a better caster and stillwater fisherman than his dad’. As a youth Alex fly fished competitively for England and has honed his techniques ever since. Alex’s strength is his incredible focus and ability to get people catching fish, which he has done all over the world. He is one of those irritating guys who makes it look easy…when it certainly isn’t.

Al

Grafham

What Al doesn’t know about Rutland and Grafham isn’t worth knowing. He is our go to guy on both these huge reservoirs, where the first problem you’ve got is knowing where to go! If you want to experience trout that are hard fighting naturalised bars of silver, you need look no further. A successful and laconic competition angler Al’s tackle is compendious. He definitely has everything you could possibly need and you can certainly learn a lot from a day on the water with him.

Nick

nick

All round countryman and life long fly fisher, Nick is our chalk stream and small river supremo. He is a Stanic qualified casting instructor, award winning conservation champion ,expert fly tyer, keen entomologist and his love of cane rods makes him as near to Isaac Walton as we’ve got. He lives next to the Great Stour in Kent and spends a lot of his time in it!

Stuart

Stuart

Based in Tomatin near Inverness Stuart is a life long Sea Trout and Salmon fisherman. Originally from Cumbria where he worked as a gamekeeper for many years his knowledge of the countryside is vast and of course he is also a rather good shot to boot. Fishing you’ll find him quite dry..he’s teetotal which has to be a first for a Salmon ghillie!

Our Services

We organise fly-fishing events and expeditions.

These range from corporate days, mates days, family days, even charity day events through to longer trips in the UK and abroad where we host parties of anglers to fantastic fly-fishing destinations for weeks at a time

Exclusively in the UK at the moment. These range in price and location depending on the size of the party and experience of the anglers plus your choice of venue, number of guides required and catering option. Indicative prices are given for budget purposes on the venue information. Guides cost £175 each per day and catering options range from bring your own for nothing to silver service and wine at £90 a head. Our established venues are Damerham in the New Forest which is ideal for novice and experienced fly fishers for parties of 6-10 and the river Test also in Hampshire for more experienced fishers and parties of up to 5.The reservoirs (Rutland, Grafham, Eyebrook, Ravensthorpe. Powdermill) can provide fishing for experienced rods from ghillied boats and for novices with tuition from the bank. The limiting factor on the size of the party being the number of ghillies we can get on a given day since they are two fishers and one ghillie to each boat. The best thing to do is work out when suits you and rough number of guests then talk to us about what options are available.

Very similar to corporate days but usually smaller numbers and more informal affairs, so let’s see what we can do for you.

These have been great fund raising events and a lot of fun. Historically they have tended to be reservoir venues because of the large numbers with fixed prices for a boat and all proceeds going to the charity. The day usually includes lunch and prizes at the end. In the past we have held days for the NSPCC, Countryside Alliance Campaign for Angling and Air Ambulance amongst others.

Casting / Fly Fishing Tuition is for up to 3 people per instructor. Typically the session involves basic instruction followed by casting practice then an introductory fishing session. Cost is £175 per head for the guide plus the venue cost which is shown on the venue information. All tackle is provided and is available (unused) for purchase.

The most common question our guides get asked is what tackle or what flies should be used. All our trips, events, tuition and mentoring sessions have tackle provided for hire and purchase. This means that you can just turn up and get properly balanced, appropriate tackle of excellent quality that you can buy new afterwards if you liked using it. We are a tackle salesman’s nightmare and a novices best friend. Because we’ve been there too.

Being able to identify what the fish are eating and match it with your fly and its presentation is a key skill. Uniquely because of Nick and Gary’s tie up with the conservation and management of chalk streams, we can offer the opportunity to join them in the river and learn hands on what lives in the river and how the river habitat works. Cost is £175 but if it’s a work party and assuming you join in with the rest of us we will discount that.

It’s amazing but a lot of anglers who take a boat out have no idea of how to use it or etiquette on the water. A day on the water with Al for two learning boat handling and rudder techniques. Oh and maybe catching a few fish in the process. Cost is £175 split between the two anglers plus the venue costs as shown on the venue page.

Our guides offer a one to one mentoring service for fly fishermen to improve their techniques and success. It was quite a surprise just how many experienced fly fishermen wanted a little help to hone their skills and this service has proved hugely popular since it was introduced. Aspects such as reading the water, how to approach the fish, planning the cast, selecting the fly, tippet construction, reading rise forms and how to strike are all covered while you are actively fishing. It is usually heavily subscribed so don’t hesitate to contact us. We are always happy to help. Check out our Gallery or Facebook page for some pictures of Steve’s day on the Gt.Stour last season. Cost is £175 for the guide for the session.
